a lot. i am very busy working on many projects. i will post photos when i can. right now my studio space at home is out of control. i have fallen in love with weaving and got a loom off of craigslist. it is wonderful and hopefully in a few weeks i will have it up and running. current projects are: a woven summer kimono made with a traditional japanese technique called weft ikat, a quilted overstuffed coat with screen printed triangles all over, a video performance involving plastic tubing and a hose, and a series of woven and sewn bead mandalas. there are still some loose ends from earlier in the semester that i hope to tie up as well. i am very excited about all of this new work, and am working on it pretty much nonstop. though times of production are very rewarding, it is difficult not to get overwhelmed and i know winter break couldn't come soon enough.

i am sick and it's really, really annoying. but, here is the piece that i showed earlier, overdyed using disperse dyes because one of the yarns is acrylic. my friend put this on and pulled some of her hair through the holes and i really like the way it looks on her.

and here is a sneak preview of two garments that will be part of a video piece that i will hopefully be making as soon as i recover from the plague.

as i mentioned before, i am working on a series of reliquaries/shrines. i just finished the first in this series and definitely need to live with it for awhile. do i want to make reliquaries or go with the idea of miniatures? i will be working on two series simultaneously; one dealing with the golden calf icon, the other with objects left beyond by the deceased. more to come.

the first of a pair of garments. i am expanding on my use of these bulbous forms, letting them exaggerate the the body. these forms offer a permanent gesture to the garment, while the body language of the wearer becomes secondary and somewhat restricted. there is some beading and other embellishing that still needs to be done, but i am going to construct the second piece first.

this is a tunnel book. the pages are attached to accordion folds on each side, allowing the structure to expand and contract like the bellows of a camera. i addressed the structure of the tunnel book as a vignette: a small, controlled environment where i have placed fragments of a moment in time. i was trying to work with a more limited palette and avoid my tendency to gold-ify everything. i think the lack of flashy color has helped make the experience of viewing this book a quiet one, which is something i am interested in exploring more. i find the format of the tunnel book to be very agreeable and will definitely be working with it more in the future.

here is the beginning of the previously described wearable piece. it is a velour spandex with little specks of gold glitter. it fits me better than the mannequin; it is not meant to be so loose. the sleeves are connected and can drag behind the body or be gathered together and held closer to the body.

three day weekends were once among the rarest breeds of weekends, usually only seen around national holidays. somehow, i have managed to secure a semester's worth of three day weekends. fifteen magical three day weekends with which i can do whatever i please. this particular three day weekend, culminating on the first of many class-free mondays, was (and still is) a wonderful one. I am now hooked (atrocious pun intended) on crocheting. and my sewing machine is ready for more. I couldn't help myself and continued on with my crocheting, despite previously giving in to my frustration. my little basket from my last post has evolved and become an integral half of my newly completed piece creamer and sugar pot, equipped with spoon. though incredibly unusable for their suggested purpose, i had a lot of fun making these objects and they are dear to me. Also, after a very large cup of coffee, i grew more ambitious and endeavored to make myself a hat from leftover yarn. i anticipate more crocheted work in the near future.

here are some things i've been working on in my drawing class. i've been working pretty small so i don't have to worry about getting my work home. most of the drawings are in pen, which i was interested in working with because of how graphic and unforgiving the medium is. my drawing professor showed us how to use silverpoint, an obsolete way of drawing where you use a piece of silver to slowly build up layers to create an image. i am working on a series of silverpoint drawings of stray dogs in rome. right now, the drawings look a lot like pencil, but in a few weeks when the silver oxidizes, the shiny grey will turn into a rich brown color.

tunisia and florence

so, fall break is over, and i am sick with raffreddore (congestion). however, i had an amazing time in tunisia and florence. an italian teacher at temple rome organized a group of 28 students to go on a bus tour of tunisia. we started in tunis and did a huge loop around the whole country. the northern part of tunisia is much like southern italy in terms of climate. the southern part of tunisia is desert. it was a week long trip, and after one day of rest, we went to florence. there we ate tuscan food (a nice change from roman), went shopping on ponte vecchio, and wandered around the city.

i'm really starting to get comfortable here in roma. i've started to go on little excursions in the mornings before class and though they're wearing me out, i love them. next week i'm going to tunisia with a group of students from the program and a teacher who's very well-versed in the tunisian culture and landscape. she refers to herself as an aspiring citizen. we're going to be taking a bus all around the country and seeing as much as we can in a week. i'm really excited but i'm prepared to be completely exhausted. i'm thrilled i still have two months here, but i'm starting to understand how great it will be to come home. i'll also have a new respect for establishments open for 24 hours; if anyone's up for a trip to wawa at 3 am in december, let me know.
